Menu FAQs

I have never tried Kava, what should I get?

Awesome question! Our kavatenders love giving recommendations, so if you prefer to be spontaneous and decide in the moment, just ask and we’ll guide you based on how you want to feel.

If you’re looking for a starting point, we typically recommend The Kraken for first-timers. It’s a concentrated form of kava designed to help you actually feel the effects on your first visit.

Here’s why: it often takes more kava to feel it the first time, because your body hasn’t processed it before. This is part of what’s known as reverse tolerance. Many people need a larger amount to feel kava initially, but less over time as their body becomes more receptive.

Keep in mind, reverse tolerance does not mean you will always need less for the full effect. It simply means your body becomes more responsive to kava the more familiar it becomes.

If you are not quite ready for The Kraken on your first visit, you can start with a couple in-house kava shots or traditional kavas. Just know that most people do not feel much after only one shell or shot on their very first try.

Does kava taste bad?

It depends. Traditional kava is earthy and natural, similar to a strong herbal tea. While most people wouldn’t call it delicious, it’s not terrible either. The flavor is often described as chalky, peppery, and slightly bitter, like spicy dirt water. But honestly, it grows on you, especially once you start feeling the relaxing effects.

We offer flavor add-ins behind the bar and have a self-serve flavor station to help customize your shell.

The Kraken is a concentrated kava drink meant to be felt, not sipped for flavor. It’s strong, and most people would agree it doesn’t taste great. However, you can add milk and flavor shots to improve it, or just slam it and chase it. Most people either doctor it up or drink it quickly.

If you’re looking for something smoother, try our Tropical Turmeric Kava Shot or Mango Kava Shot. Both are made to be taken like a shot and are much more palatable than The Kraken or even traditional kava. Pro tip: adding a squeeze of lime to the Tropical Turmeric Shot makes it even better.

I am interested in Kratom, what should I have for my first time?

If you’re trying Kratom for the first time, we recommend starting with our traditional Indo Tea. It has a mild, earthy flavor similar to other herbal teas, though it’s not naturally sweet. Many people enjoy adding honey, agave, lemon, or lime to enhance the taste. You can enjoy it hot or iced, and you’re welcome to customize it further using the flavor syrups available at our flavor station.

Our Indo Tea is a balanced blend that includes all three Kratom veins: red, green, and white, offering a well-rounded, beginner-friendly experience. If you’re looking for a more targeted effect, we also offer Red Indo Tea and Green Indo Tea on nitro, each with its own distinct properties.

How do Ohana’s botanical drinks help people unwind or relax?

At Ohana, we offer a wide range of botanical beverages designed to help you feel more relaxed and centered, naturally. Our signature kava drinks are rooted in South Pacific tradition and are known for their calming, grounding qualities making them a popular choice for those looking to unwind without alcohol.

Beyond kava, our lineup includes:

  • Indo Teas, chosen by some for their balanced and centering effects, made with Kratom leaves.

  • CBD-infused beverages, which many enjoy for their smooth, mellow feel

  • Functional mushroom drinks featuring ingredients like lion’s mane and reishi, traditionally used to support overall well-being

  • Kombucha and other canned drinks that offer refreshing, plant-based alternatives to sugary or alcoholic beverages

Whether you’re easing into the evening or just taking a mindful pause, Ohana’s botanical menu offers a variety of ways to relax and reconnect.

Do you have alcoholic beverages on your menu?

We do not. Ohana Kava Bar is a zero-proof bar, meaning all of our drinks are alcohol-free. Instead, we serve traditional beverages like kava, a root from the South Pacific that has been used for centuries in social and ceremonial settings for its calming and relaxing effects.

Many people enjoy kava as a natural alternative to alcohol, as it can promote a sense of ease, relaxation, and social connection, without impairing clarity or motor skills. It’s a great option for those looking to unwind in a mindful, balanced way.

Do you have options for people who do not want to have kava or kratom?

Absolutely. Just like your favorite coffee shop offers more than just coffee, we offer more than just kava or kratom. At Ohana, there’s something for everyone.

Our drink menu includes:

  • Coffee, teas, and energy drinks

  • Juices, coconut water, and lemonade

  • Kombucha and a wide variety of canned beverages

  • Functional botanical drinks with ingredients like CBD or adaptogenic mushrooms

Whether you’re looking for something refreshing, energizing, or calming, we have plenty of zero-proof options to enjoy.

Do you serve food?

We do not prepare or cook food at Ohana Kava Bar. However, we do offer a selection of packaged snacks for purchase. You’re also welcome to bring in your own food, as long as you’re ordering a drink or item from our menu as well.

What does kava feel like?

Kava creates a unique experience that many describe as a full-body and mind relaxation happening at the same time. People often compare it to the calm you feel after a full body massage. Your muscles relax, your thoughts slow down, and your overall mood becomes lighter.

The effects are usually calming, clear-headed, and socially uplifting all at once. It’s common to feel physically at ease, mentally relaxed, and more open or social, without feeling foggy or impaired. While individual experiences can vary, kava is widely enjoyed for its ability to bring both body and mind into a peaceful, balanced state.

What if I have had alcohol recently, can I still have kava?

As a rule, our kavatenders will not serve anyone who appears impaired by alcohol or other substances. For your safety, it’s important not to mix kava or kratom with alcohol or anything else that is processed through the liver. Doing so may increase the risk of liver strain or other health issues.

If you’ve had a drink or two, we recommend waiting several hours before consuming kava. When in doubt, feel free to ask our staff. We’re here to help you enjoy our drinks safely and responsibly.

This also means if you have had kava or kratom, wait before having alcohol.

How long do the effects of kava last?

The effects of kava typically last around one hour for most people, though stronger servings or larger amounts can last up to three hours. Kava is more of a calm, grounding experience than a buzz or a high, so it’s best to ease into it.

Effects build gradually, so be patient and allow time to feel the full experience before deciding to drink more. Consuming too much too quickly can lead to discomfort rather than relaxation. Take your time, listen to your body, and enjoy the mellow ride.

The effects of kratom typically last between 2-6 hours. When consuming by tea/drink the effects come on faster and do not last as long as if you were taking capsules. It depends on the individuals tolerance and metabolism.

How long do the effects of kratom last?

The effects of kratom typically last between 2 to 6 hours. When consumed as a tea or drink, the effects usually come on faster but may not last as long compared to taking capsules or other slower-release forms.

Duration can vary depending on factors like your individual tolerance, body weight, and metabolism. Lighter servings may offer a shorter, more subtle experience, while stronger servings can produce longer-lasting effects. As always, it’s best to start low and go slow, especially if you’re new to kratom.
